The New DV1 Viscometer... new look, new feel and new features!

Middleboro, MA - Brookfield Engineering introduces the new DV1 Viscometer - the lowest-cost, continuous sensing digital viscometer in the Brookfield family of instruments. Almost every part of the instrument sports a fresh new appearance from top to bottom.

The head of the DV1 Viscometer features a new shape and a larger easy-to-read display. Multiple language choices are now included and the user interface has three hot keys for quick access to spindle selection, test speed and other functions. The operator can now customize the display, choosing which number appears larger on screen based on their operational preferences. And the new DV1 features the same lab stand found on Brookfield’s DV3T Rheometer and DV2T Viscometer, providing plenty of room for sample placement.

Free Powder Sample Testing Evaluates Powder Behavior and Flowability

Middleboro, MA - Brookfield Engineering Laboratories offers free powder sample testing using Brookfield’s PFT Powder Flow Tester to characterize a powder’s behavior and flowability. The testing determines Flow Function, Wall Friction, Arching Diameter and Bulk Density as a function of consolidation stresses. Shear cell methodology is the technical approach used to test all customer samples in accordance with ASTM D6128, D6682 and D6773. Rathole diameter and Internal Friction Angle can also be provided at the customers request.

The testing is typically completed in less than a week and the results are emailed to the customer. These reports provide the customer with actual data that can be used to improve their process by characterizing powders with flow aids, and serve as a reference for future powder formulations.

The first three Powder Sample Tests are free with a nominal charge for additional sample testing. Arrangements can also be made for customers to use the PFT at their facility for a one week trial period.

Sample testing can be completed in any of Brookfield’s Powder Testing Labs, located in Boston Massachusetts USA, Harlow Essex England, Lorch Germany, Guangzhou China, and Mumbai India.

The New Quick 5-Point Flow Function Test Saves Time and Improves Quality

Middleboro, MA - Brookfield is pleased to announce that the Quick 5-Point Flow Function Test is now integrated into Powder Flow Pro Software, version 1.3 (build 23). This quick new test can be accomplished in about 16 minutes as compared to the Standard 5-Point Flow Function Test which takes about 25 minutes to complete. This considerable reduction in time allows for more rapid QA/QC checks on production powder batches.

The predecessor to this test was the Quick Standard 2-Point Flow Function Test which only provided data for the lowest and highest consolidated stress values.

The 5-Point Test provides the operator with five predefined consolidation stress measurements. These five points of data are then used to provide a more accurate representation of the powder's flow characteristics, through a hopper or feeder system. This allows manufacturers to predict potential flow problems before they occur and make necessary adjustments to improve production and product quality.

Middleboro, MA - Brookfield welcomes three new instruments into its touch screen family of rheometers: the RST-CPS Cone Plate Rheometer, the RST-CC Coaxial Cylinder Rheometer and the RST-SST Soft Solids Tester Rheometer. TexturePro CT Software Now 21 CFR Compliant

Middleboro, MA - Texture Pro CT software from Brookfield is now 21CFR Part 11 compliant. Related features include controlled user access to specific test methods and data security for safe and permanent record keeping. This version is ideal for use by regulated industries, such as pharmaceuticals, nutritional supplements, foods, and personal care products.

TexturePro CT is a powerful, intuitive, and robust application that helps users perform detailed texture analysis on test samples of various shapes and sizes. The primary advantage gained from use of the software is automation of test procedure and removal of operator bias from the test. Real-time graphic plotting lets operators create custom reports and graphs directly from a menu screen during tests.

The newly released version 1.3 is an optional item available for purchase and use with all CT3 Texture Analyzer orders. TexturePro CT software, which connects directly to your computer via USB, is designed specifically for use with Brookfield’s CT3 Texture Analyzer. New Rheocalc T Software for DV2T Viscometers and DV3T Rheometers

Brookfield announces the release of Rheocalc T software for automated viscosity testing when using a PC with the new DV2T Viscometer and DV3T Rheometer. The user interface for Rheocalc T presents an enhanced range of choices for test method creation and data gathering/analysis. Loop functions allow performance of repetitive tasks on test samples that require viscosity measurement at multiple rotational speeds, different temperature set points, and discreet time intervals. Viscosity data averaging is now possible for individual tasks within a test step or over multiple steps in the total test program. These improvements satisfy customer requests for greater flexibility in execution of test method and management of viscosity data.

Rheocalc T collects data from the instrument and allows it to be saved, viewed, printed, plotted and analyzed. QC limits for acceptable viscosity values can be displayed directly on the data graph so that pass/fail decisions can be made on visual inspection. Advanced data analysis to assess yield stress and pseudoplastic index can be performed with a choice of math models: Bingham, Casson, NCA/CMA Casson, Power Law, IPC Paste, and Herschel-Bulkley.

Data management options include export of data files to Excel or to read-only pdf formats. File extension for data managed within Rheocalc T software is .vdt. Data files can be shared with other users who run Rheocalc T on their PC so that analyses can be reviewed in group discussions.

Rheocalc T can be used with any PC that runs Windows 8, 7, Vista or XP. Processor speed should be 2 GHz or higher. Minimum RAM requirement is 1GB. 2 USB ports are recommended to support viscosity testing with concurrent temperature control using a Brookfield accessory, such as TC Circulating Temperature Bath or Thermosel System.

IQOQPQ on Brookfield Powder Flow Tester for Pharmaceutical Industry

The Brookfield Powder Flow Tester can now be certified for IQOQPQ through a choice of special programs offered by Brookfield Engineering. The customer is able to self-certify using the customized IQOQPQ document for PFT and a calibrated reference powder called BCR-116 Limestone. Alternatively, Brookfield or an authorized dealer will come to the customer’s facility with a PFT calibration kit that verifies performance of the sensors in the instrument. Both methods confirm the performance of the PFT and enable the customer to complete the IQOQPQ prior to start of formal use for powder flow testing.

When a customer elects to self-certify the Brookfield Powder Flow Tester, the customer can procure both the IQOQPQ document and the BCR-116 Limestone powder from Brookfield. This is most often accomplished at the time of purchase for the PFT. The document comes with clear instruction on each step required to accomplish the installation, operation and performance protocol for the instrument. BCR-116 Limestone is certified by the European Commission in Belgium and comes with a Certificate of Calibration. Brookfield provides additional documentation with the BCR-116 Limestone which explains the step by step methodology for testing the instrument with the powder and the expected range of values for “unconfined failure strength” at each “consolidating stress”. Once the calibration check procedure is completed, the instrument is ready for service.

Alternatively, a separate service to accomplish IQOQPQ is to arrange for Brookfield to visit the customer facility and perform the calibration check with a special kit that measures the output of the position, load force and torque sensors in the instrument. These three measurements verify that the instrument is working properly. The values are recorded in the PQ section of the document. The kit is available on a worldwide basis and can be scheduled directly with Brookfield or any authorized dealer.

New Material Choices for Shear Cell Kits with Brookfield Powder Flow Tester

The Brookfield Powder Flow Tester utilizes shear cell methodology to measure the flow behavior of industrial powders in gravity discharge through converging hoppers. The Shear Cell Kit is comprised of two components, the Trough and Lid, which are made from 304 stainless steel. Ideally this steel is similar to the material used in the construction of the hopper.

New choices for the Trough and Lid include mild steel, 316 stainless steel, and Tivar. This provides the customer with more selections to better simulate the actual working conditions with the equipment on the plant floor. Upon special request, customers are able to specify different materials which Brookfield will custom design into Trough and Lid per direction from the end user.

The standard Shear Cell Kit consists of a Trough, or chamber, into which the powder sample is placed. A choice of Lids with either vane pockets or smooth surface finish is used to compress the powder to a defined “consolidating stress”. The shearing action of the Lid against the powder at the interface plane with the Trough generates a shear stress which is measured as the yield stress, or “failure strength”, for powder movement.

Middleboro, MA – Brookfield Engineering introduces the TA-GPJ – General Peeling Jig was developed to measure the force required to peel the lid off a sealed container. A strong adhesive bond is critical to preventing contamination and spoilage, but ease and consistency when opening is equally important to consumers. The fixture maintains a 90° angle as the tape is pulled away from the substrate. The CT3 Tester measures the adhesive force to separate the tape. Brookfield recently launched the new DV3T Touch Screen Rheometer delivering a totally new user experience. This major redesign enhances ease of use and includes many new features. Brookfield Viscosity Standards Now Come With Expiration Date

Middleboro, MA – Best industry practice recommends that calibration materials be replaced on a scheduled basis. In response to customer input, Brookfield has now added an expiration date to their silicone viscosity standards used to perform calibration checks on viscometers and rheometers. This new information appears on the jar label as well as on the certificate of calibration that comes with the fluid. Lab managers will now have a firm date for reordering replacement fluids.

Silicone Viscosity Standards provide operators with a convenient, reliable way to verify the calibration of their Brookfield rotational Viscometers/Rheometers. They are accurate to ±1% and offer excellent temperature stability. They are Newtonian and are available in either silicone or oil. Special viscosity values and temperature calibrations are available upon request.

Brookfield’s revolutionary Powder Flow Tester has a solution for small powder samples. Requiring only 43cc of powder, the Small Volume Shear Cell is perfect for pharmaceutical formulators who test expensive powders in limited quantities. The Small Volume Shear Cell has an added technical performance ability to generate higher consolidation stresses simulating conditions in larger bins and silos, which may be appropriate for less expensive excipients.

The Brookfield Powder Flow Tester provides rapid capability to evaluate flow behavior. R&D formulators, QA/QC technicians, and process design engineers alike will benefit from PFT data output which includes Flow Function and Bulk Density analysis, as well as calculations for Arching Dimension, Rathole Diameter, and Hopper Half Angle. Powder characterization is accomplished using predefined tests that execute automatically in a matter of minutes. Results can be used to minimize or eliminate the downtime and expense that occurs when hoppers fail to discharge properly.

Powder Flow Pro Software controls operation of the PFT and provides detailed data in both tabular and graphical format. For example: Rathole Diameter is plotted vs. powder fill level in the bin; Hopper Half Angle required to achieve mass flow behavior for the powder is plotted vs. hopper outlet dimension. The Brookfield PFT Powder Flow Tester provides quick and easy analysis of powder flow behavior in industrial processing equipment.

Powder Flow Pro v1.2 includes a new Comparison Feature that allows the operator to combine, display and compare data from both standard and small shear cell tests in a single graph. This gives customers the ability to test and compare how powders will respond in small bins with low consolidating stress and in large bins with high consolidating stress.

Another brand new feature of Powder Flow Pro v1.2 is the Normalized Flow Function. As more product is added to the hopper, consolidation stress increases raising the potential for stable bridges or “arching” to occur. Free Powder Sample Testing in Five New Brookfield Powder Labs!

Middleboro, MA - Brookfield Engineering has established new Powder Testing Labs in Boston Massachusetts USA, Harlow Essex England, Lorch Germany, Guangzhou China, and Mumbai India. Brookfield developed these labs in response to increasing customer demand for rapid evaluation of powder behavior and flowability. Customer samples are tested using Brookfield’s PFT Powder Flow Tester for Flow Function, Wall Friction and Bulk Density as a function of consolidation stresses. Shear cell methodology is the technical approach used to test all customer samples in accordance with ASTM D6128, D6682 and D6773.

The testing is completed within five business days and the results are emailed to the customer. These reports enable the customer to see actual data which can be used to improve their process by characterizing powders with flow aids, and serve as a reference for future powder formulations.

Brookfield offers the first three Powder Sample Tests for free with a nominal charge for additional sample testing. Customers are also given the opportunity to use the PFT at their facility for a one week trial period.

Brookfield Name Chiang to Product Manager – Texture Analyzers

Middleboro, MA – Brookfield Engineering Laboratories is pleased to announce the appointment of Eric Chiang to the position of Product Manager - Texture Analyzers. Eric will be serving in the place of Len Thibodeau who has recently announced his retirement. Len has been Brookfield’s Product Manager since early 2005.

Since joining Brookfield in 2007, Eric has provided customers with sales assistance and technical support for both the domestic and international markets. He has also served on the Brookfield Training team, teaching customers how to get the most out of their Brookfield Instruments.

Secure Testing with Brookfield CT3 Texture Analyzer

Middleboro, MA - Guaranteeing food supply safety has many aspects and more twists and turns than we might anticipate. Recent out breaks of food-borne illnesses from a variety of causes attests to this fact. Identifying the sources often involves tracking the product from its origin to the consumer. This process is complicated because many products are commodities that are often blended together along the way.

One area that isn't often mentioned in media news stories is the data from food product testing. The integrity of test data on food products is also subject to issues with batch tracking, accidental errors affecting data integrity and intentional misdeeds. The pharmaceutical industry is most protective of data integrity, largely by regulation, which has made testing software for pharmaceutical applications very expensive.

More reasonably priced software for food testing data is now available while still ensuring data integrity and traceability. Brookfield Texture Pro software comes with an active secure mode which accommodates multiple login identities but only one administrator login. The responsibility of the administrator is to set up testing protocols with naming schemes convenient to the products being tested. The actual testing is then done by technicians or QC personnel with normal user login names. User logins are unable to change or create any testing protocols. All test protocols can only be run exactly as they were specified by the administrator at the time they were created. The system prevents accidental, or intentional, changes in the test methodology, further insuring valid test data.

All test results are secure in a locked down Microsoft Access database. This provides a very compact system for storing a lot of test data while still enabling quick and easy access to your data files through intuitive search filters.

Rheological Properties for Waterborne Paints and Coatings

New Syringe Test Fixture Helps Manufacturers Control the Flow!

New Appointments from BEL Board of Directors/Officers

The Brookfield Engineering Laboratories Board of Directors recently accepted the resignation of Louis DiCorpo as Chairman of the Board. The Board expressed their deep gratitude to Lou, who has devotedly served Brookfield and its customers for 55 years. Lou will stay active and involved with the company continuing on with the title of Chairman Emeritus.

The Board unanimously appointed David A. Brookfield, the previous President, to the position of Chairman of the Board. David continues to serve as the CEO of Brookfield Engineering Laboratories and will continue to lead Brookfield Research & Product Development.

Donald W. Brookfield, Jr. has been appointed to the position of President while continuing in his role as Director of Sales, Marketing and Human Resources. As President, Don will continue to grow the Brookfield brand with its international dealer network and customers around the world.

New Powder Flow Pro Software Delivers "Critical" Test Data!

Middleboro, MA - Brookfield Engineering has released Powder Flow Pro V1.1, a new updated version of Brookfield's automated software used to control it's Powder Flow Tester. Significant changes include a modified test method designed to achieve "critical consolidation" of the powder sample contained in the shear cell. Updated data graphics and improved test formats are also provided.

The new Powder Flow Pro V1.1 is available via download free of charge to customers who have purchased a Brookfield Powder Flow Tester.

With this new critical consolidation procedure, the shear cell Trough turns in repeated short rotations while a constant consolidation stress is applied by the Vane Lid. This causes the powder material to settle into place, removing air pockets and achieving a "low-energy" state. With the powder packed as tight as possible, the instrument can then determine the powder's failure strength by shearing the material in the Lid against the material in the Trough.

The new Powder Flow Pro software also features improved graphing capabilities, allowing for additional ways to use and manipulate data. Powder Flow Pro calculates and displays data in a variety of formats at the end of each test, and is able to overlay up to eight separate powder sample tests on a single graph for easy comparison.

Brookfield on the Move in the UK

Middleboro, MA - Brookfield Engineering, the worldwide leader in viscosity measurement and control, announces the expansion and relocation of their United Kingdom headquarters. The move to the new Brookfield Technical Centre was necessary to accommodate Brookfield's significant growth in recent years. While remaining in Harlow, Essex, the new Stadium Way location is twice the size of their previous office.

Brookfield's new facility features expanded office space for international sales and marketing efforts. It also gives them space to increase their service & repair center and provides plenty of storage for instruments and spare parts.

Another exciting feature of the new location is an area specifically designed for on-site training and seminars. This space includes a laboratory where customers can immediately apply the theory they have learned in the classroom.

Brookfield Names Thomas Babington Senior Product Development Engineer

Tom brings over 25 years of industry experience in product development serving a variety of industries. He has worked on everything from toys and power tools to automotive sensors.

Since coming on board, Tom's focus has been keeping Brookfield on the front edge of new technologies while incorporating his existing knowledge and experience into Brookfield products. New "How-To Calibrate" Videos Will Keep Your Brookfield Instruments on Target!

Middleboro, MA — Brookfield Engineering introduces a news series of free online training videos detailing how to verify calibration of Viscometers and Rheometers. Available to registered customers at www.brookfiedengineering.com under "Support/Video Clips," customers can view them whenever they have a question about the calibration check procedure.

These videos demonstrate Brookfield's recommended method for performing a comprehensive calibration check on Viscometers and Rheometers in different configurations standard disc spindles with a 6500 mL beaker, coaxial cylinder geometries such as the Small Sample Adapter, Wells/Brookfield Cone & Plate instruments and R/S-CPS Cone Plate Rheometers. The videos discuss topics including instrument set-up, temperature control of sample, calibration tolerance and pass/fail criteria.
